PAY RATE: $69,316.78 - $97,017.70
WORK SCHEDULE: 8:00am – 5:00pm, Monday – Friday
Job Summary:
The City of East Lansing, Michigan, a residential community of 47,700 people and home to Michigan State University, is seeking a Deputy City Assessor. The City has 9,278 parcels (7,161 residential parcels; 681 commercial parcels; 1,428 personal property parcels; and 8 industrial parcels) with a total 2024 SEV of $1,734,500,300.
This position reports to the City Assessor and performs administrative and technical work involving the inspection and appraisal of real and personal property, assists in the preparation of the annual assessment rolls, conducts audits of personal property, and acts on behalf of the City Assessor in his/her absence. The City’s assessing operations are organized as a division of the City’s Finance Department.
Qualifications:
- Possession of a Michigan Certified Assessing Officer certification from the State Tax Commission is required; possession of a Michigan Advanced Assessing Officer certification is preferred.
- A Bachelor's degree or equivalent in business administration, finance, accounting, economics, or a related field is preferred.
- Three years of experience in local government is required.
- A valid Michigan driver’s license and use of personal vehicle is required.
Additional qualifications include strong written and oral communication skills, experience with advanced computer operations including BS&A’s Assessing.Net software, and Microsoft Office proficiency in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. To perform the essential functions of the job, an individual may be required to stay in one period for prolonged periods of time, ability to move within the office and to perform inspections, handle light objects (<25 lbs.), and operate assigned office equipment, including computers. Must be able to communicate effectively with other City staff, the public, and other stakeholders.
